Heritage Trees of Penang

The Great Tree featured on the cover of the book “The Heritage Trees of Penang” was a famous tourist attraction during the 19th century and was even featured in an 1832 map of Penang. Historical records indicate it was probably a Jelutong tree (Dyera costulata) although the crown shape and bark colour depicted in the artwork is not typical for this species. This book is a celebration of 200 trees which form an integral part of the natural, cultural and urban heritage of Penang.
